7 Steps to a Successful Transaction at the POS

7 Steps to a Successful Transaction at the POS

Every transaction at the point of sale (POS) is an opportunity to provide a smooth, accurate, and memorable guest experience. Following these 7 steps ensures guests leave happy and our store stays secure.

1. Greet the Guest

Why it matters: A warm greeting sets the tone for the visit. It immediately makes the guest feel welcome and valued, encouraging engagement and repeat visits.

2. PERKS Sign-Up

Ask the guest if they’re already a PERKS member.
  1. If yes, look them up by email to apply rewards or points.
  2. If no, offer to sign them up via the “Search Customer” function and add them to marketing communications.
Why it matters: PERKS membership enhances the guest experience, strengthens relationships, and drives loyalty and repeat visits.

3. Ring Up Each Item – Accuracy Is Critical

  1. Scan each item’s barcode.
  2. If a barcode doesn’t work, try looking it up by barcode number or product description.
  3. If it still doesn’t register, get your manager’s help immediately.
Important – Verify Every Item Before Completing the Sale:
After ringing up all items, count each one carefully to ensure the physical items match what’s showing in the POS. This step is essential—it prevents any items from leaving the store without being paid for. Accuracy here protects inventory, prevents loss, and maintains guest trust.

Why it matters: Correct ringing and verification prevent mistakes, protect the store’s merchandise, and provide a smooth, professional experience for guests.

4. Round Up (When Applicable)

If participating in a charitable give-back, ask the guest if they’d like to round up their purchase to support the featured nonprofit.

Why it matters: Guests feel good contributing to the community, and it reinforces Belleville Market’s commitment to giving back.

5. Bag the Items – Double-Check Before They Leave

  1. Bag all purchased items unless the guest has their own bag.
  2. Use appropriately sized bags for each item.
  3. Crucial: Before handing the bags to the guest, quickly check that all purchased items are included and nothing is left behind.
Why it matters: Proper bagging protects purchases, prevents unintentional loss, and demonstrates attention to detail. This step ensures all items leaving the store are accounted for and paid for.

6. Promote

  1. Provide every guest with a rack card.
  2. Highlight relevant promotions, events, or campaigns, such as:
    1. Holiday Open House
    2. Street Faire
    3. More Than a Purchase campaign
  3. Check the Daily Rundown for any daily focus items or events.
Why it matters: Promoting upcoming events and campaigns keeps guests engaged, informed, and more likely to return. It positions Belleville Market as a vibrant community destination.

7. Send Them Off with a Smile

Thank the guest, wish them a great day, and invite them to return soon.

Why it matters: A genuine farewell leaves a lasting positive impression, encouraging repeat visits and word-of-mouth referrals.

✅ Summary: Following these 7 steps ensures every POS transaction is smooth, accurate, and meaningful. From greeting to goodbye, each step strengthens guest trust, loyalty, and satisfaction—while protecting Belleville Market’s merchandise and operations.
